Florida Fishing Report | September Best Bets

Local Waters Should Start Coming Alive this Month!

The waters along Taylor County’s Coastline still remain oil free. We have had the good fortune so far as to have escaped what could have been a real tragedy on our coastline had the oil made it into this area.

Scalloping has been great in the waters around Dekle and Keaton Beach; however the water has not cleared up enough out from the Econfina River to be able to even see any scallops if there are any in the area.

Folks are still catching trout out in the deeper waters from the Econfina and Aucilla Rivers. Most of those who are fishing seem to be bouncing grubs off the bottom to provoke the bite. So if you’re fishing with a cork remember to fish deep. Reds continue to be in the shallow waters around the 2 to 4 feet depths and continue to hit top water plugs like the Skitter Walk (trout and redfish colors) also the Top Dogs continue to do well in the early morning hours. Remember that from mid to late September and October fish will be starting to head back South. The trout and red fishing will definitely be picking up this month and next month.

I’ve had several reports of large schools of jacks and blue fish already starting to feed on some of the larger schools of bait fish.  I had one report of tarpon being seen coming out of the water back towards Spring Warrior. This can only mean that things are about to start happening. So when you see the schools of bait fish being busted it might not be a bad idea to toss a plug or a grub in the middle of the school and see what happens.

The mullet seem to be a hit and a miss thus far, I went the other day and the mullet were all over the place and went back the next day and couldn’t buy a mullet, but they will also be starting the bunch up in the next month or so.

I still haven’t had any reports from anyone going out to try Grouper fishing from the Econfina or Aucilla rivers lately. Remember that this is the time of year for those afternoon thunder storms that can produce plenty of lightning, so remember if you can see it your probably too close.

Best bets for the month of September would be to continue to fish the shallower water in the early morning hours for redfish and maybe stray trout. Fish the deeper water (8 to 10) feet depths bouncing grubs off the bottom for the trout that are lying out in the cooler waters. Also, don’t forget to pack the cast net before leaving just in case you happen upon a few mullet. And as always don’t forget to include the family in all those outdoor plans.

Florida Fishing Report | July Best Bets

Well as suspected June also provided some excellent fishing and produced some large Trout and Reds out of the Econfina and Aucilla Rivers.  It seems that most of the trout are starting to move offshore into the deeper depths as the water temperatures really start to heat up. Trout are being caught out in 8 to 10 feet of water and some as far out as 12 feet.  Trout seem to be taking the Pearl White and New Penny Gulps on a jig head out in the deeper depths tight lining off the bottom.

Reds continue to be caught around the creek mouths on live shrimp and on Pearl White Gulps under Cajun Thunders and also on some of the outer bars fishing on the bottom with the Gulps. Some of the larger Reds continue to be caught on top water plugs like the Skitter Walks, Top Dogs, and Super Spooks. These fish continue to lie out in the skinnier waters waiting to ambush the smaller mullet hanging in the bays.  Fishing these plugs in the 1 to 2 feet of water outside the creek mouths and in the bays should produce some good Redfish action and maybe even a big trout still hanging in close.

The mullet also seem to be showing themselves more now than in the past couple of months out of the Econfina and Aucilla rivers.  I’ve also had several reports from folks catching some nice Cobia while out Trout fishing so don’t be afraid to leave that old pinfish out under a cork while your doing your drift fishing for Trout. I’ve also had a couple of reports from folks catching their limits of Group while fishing out from the Econfina and Aucilla but they are having to move around to do it.

Remember scalloping season opened on June 19th this year. So when your out on the waters please remember to stay focused on where your going and watch for the dive flags. Like years past I’m sure there are going to be folks out in numbers gathering those delicious little morsels. For the moment our waters in and around Taylor County’s coastline remain clean and free of any ill side effects of the oil spill.

July’s best bets are to fish the creek and creek mouths using live shrimp on bottom for reds, and fish the deeper water 8 to 12 feet depths on bottom for trout.  Fish inshore in

1 to 2 feet of water using the top water plugs for the larger red fish. Until next month stay safe on the waters and don’t forget to include family and children in those outdoor plans.

Florida Fishing Report | June Best Bets

I’ll tell you what!!!! So far the month of May has provided some spectacular fishing along Taylor County’s coastline. Large Reds and Trout are being caught from Steinhatchee all the way to the Aucilla River. The top water bite has really kicked in as I predicted in last month’s article, with the Reds and Trout tearing up top water plugs.  I’ve heard several folks on the radio talking about Cobia also being caught out from the Econfina River. The Reds and Trout are really hitting the Spitting Image, Skitter Walks (trout and red colors); they have also been hitting the Bite a Bait parrot colored.

The larger sow Trout have also been on the grass line starting to spawn during the month of May. There have been a good number of Trout being caught out in 6 to 7 feet of water.  There are a lot of bait shrimp in that depth of water that these fish are feeding on. When fishing for these fish you’ll need to get rid of the corks and go to the bottom, bouncing a Berkley Gulp (pearl white or new penny) off the bottom should produce some fine fish. Don’t forget about the Cobia that are traveling through during this time of year, you may want to float a live pin fish off the back of your boat in case one happens by.  Spanish Mackerel are also being caught on the flats; as you may your line cut off several times throughout the day.  Remember as the water temperatures continue to rise the Trout will start to head out to deeper water, (10 to 12 feet). Don’t be afraid to venture out and test the deeper waters. The larger Reds continue to hang around the outer bars and points waiting to ambush the smaller mullet and bait fish, just about all the creeks are full of them.  If you can’t catch a Red now you ain’t fishing and remember the rule, when you pull into the creek to fish for Reds, if you don’t get a bite within 10 minutes MOVE ON.

With most all of the local tournaments completed for the month of May maybe the waters will settle back down for those that choose not to fish during tournament time. Best bets for the month of June in my book would be to fish the creeks and points using live shrimp for Reds.  Also continue fishing the grass line using the top water plugs (Skitter Walks, Spitting Image, Top Dog Pups) for Trout and Reds, and continue to fish in 5 to 7 feet of water for Trout, and don’t be afraid to test the deeper water (8 to 12 feet depths) fishing on bottom for Trout laying out there feeding on the bait shrimp. Florida Fishing Report | May Best Bets

The month of April provided some excellent fishing for speckled trout and redfish. With the water temperatures on the rise fishing should only get better during the month of May.  For some reason top water fishing has been a lot better back to the South, the top water bite has not really started from the Econfina or Aucilla Rivers as I’m writing this article. I’m not sure if it’s the fresh water or water temperatures! In the coming weeks the water temperature will continue to rise and the top water bite should kick into action.  A good number of fish are being caught in the 4’ to 6’ water depths using the Berkley Gulps, either the New Penny or Pearl White out of the rivers. Redfish continue to be caught on the points and bars using shrimp and jerk baits. The rain has finally subsided and the waters are starting to clean-up a little out from the rivers.

The blue fish and mackerel are also starting to move into the area so don’t be surprised if you are cutoff a couple of times a day while fishing the flats. There has been very few grouper caught by the few folks that have been going out from the Econfina. This month should provide some large trout being caught as they will be on the grass line starting to spawn. That could mean a lot of money for the angler that is lucky enough to catch the large one during the upcoming tournaments. We’ve had to weed through some days that have had high winds, but for the most part we’ve seen some good weather this past month. With the Good Lord’s Blessing the month of May will bring us some of the same good weather we’ve had recently. With the waters starting to clear up we won’t be able to take much more rain before they turn dark again. Best bets for the month of May will be to continue to fish the points and bars for redfish using shrimp and jerk baits, continue to fish the flats in the 4’ to 8’ depths as the trout are going to continue to move out onto the flats after bait shrimp and pinfish. Don’t forget to keep trying the top water plugs in the shallow water and on the grass line for large trout and reds. Please don’t forget to include the children and family in those outdoor plans and send me the reports and pictures to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Happy boating through the month of May!

Florida Fishing Report | April Best Bets

TROUT AND REDS ARE ABUNDANT

I tell you what, these rains don’t seem to be stopping but the trout and reds have really been turning it on the last couple of weeks.  Some of the colder nights earlier in the month didn’t help things any but, as the sun got higher in the sky during the day and things warmed up the fish seemed to bite better.

The waters out of the rivers are stained but it really hasn’t effected the fishing that much. One important thing to remember while running in the rivers with all the fresh water coming out of the woods is that debris such as logs, small trees and limbs can mess up a motor foot if you happen to hit the right one.  I’ve had several good reports from folks catching limits of trout and reds toward the Fenholloway River and Spring Warrior area the last couple of weeks.  They are fishing around the oyster bars and creek mouths using sinking and suspended plugs. We fished over towards Rock Island the second week of March and did real well on trout using sinking plugs, the reds for some reason didn’t want to cooperate that day.  I’ve also had a couple of reports of folks catching reds back towards the Aucilla River but I haven’t ventured over that way yet. With the water temperatures rising it won’t be long until the trout start to head out onto the flats. Also along with the temperatures rising comes the top water bait bite.

As water temperatures rise the trout and reds will begin to get a little more aggressive and start to hit the top water plugs. With the good Lords Blessing the rains and winds will soon cease and we can get down to some great fishing. Best bets for April will be to continue to fish the creeks with live shrimp for the red fish, also fish around the points and bars using the sinking and suspended plugs. I wouldn’t forget to start trying a little top water action towards the end of the month of April in close for reds and trout. Don’t forget to drop me a line, book a trip, or just visit us on our web site at www.bullredcharters.com. Well I guess that about does it for now, don’t forget to include the family and children in those outdoor activities and boat safe.

Happy Fishing,

Capt. Bry Martin
