Florida Fishing Report | May Best Bets

The month of April provided some excellent fishing for speckled trout and redfish. With the water temperatures on the rise fishing should only get better during the month of May.  For some reason top water fishing has been a lot better back to the South, the top water bite has not really started from the Econfina or Aucilla Rivers as I’m writing this article. I’m not sure if it’s the fresh water or water temperatures! In the coming weeks the water temperature will continue to rise and the top water bite should kick into action.  A good number of fish are being caught in the 4’ to 6’ water depths using the Berkley Gulps, either the New Penny or Pearl White out of the rivers. Redfish continue to be caught on the points and bars using shrimp and jerk baits. The rain has finally subsided and the waters are starting to clean-up a little out from the rivers.

The blue fish and mackerel are also starting to move into the area so don’t be surprised if you are cutoff a couple of times a day while fishing the flats. There has been very few grouper caught by the few folks that have been going out from the Econfina. This month should provide some large trout being caught as they will be on the grass line starting to spawn. That could mean a lot of money for the angler that is lucky enough to catch the large one during the upcoming tournaments. We’ve had to weed through some days that have had high winds, but for the most part we’ve seen some good weather this past month. With the Good Lord’s Blessing the month of May will bring us some of the same good weather we’ve had recently. With the waters starting to clear up we won’t be able to take much more rain before they turn dark again. Best bets for the month of May will be to continue to fish the points and bars for redfish using shrimp and jerk baits, continue to fish the flats in the 4’ to 8’ depths as the trout are going to continue to move out onto the flats after bait shrimp and pinfish. Don’t forget to keep trying the top water plugs in the shallow water and on the grass line for large trout and reds. Please don’t forget to include the children and family in those outdoor plans and send me the reports and pictures to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Happy boating through the month of May!
