Florida Fishing Report | September Best Bets
Local Waters Should Start Coming Alive this Month!
The waters along Taylor County’s Coastline still remain oil free. We have had the good fortune so far as to have escaped what could have been a real tragedy on our coastline had the oil made it into this area.
Scalloping has been great in the waters around Dekle and Keaton Beach; however the water has not cleared up enough out from the Econfina River to be able to even see any scallops if there are any in the area.
Folks are still catching trout out in the deeper waters from the Econfina and Aucilla Rivers. Most of those who are fishing seem to be bouncing grubs off the bottom to provoke the bite. So if you’re fishing with a cork remember to fish deep. Reds continue to be in the shallow waters around the 2 to 4 feet depths and continue to hit top water plugs like the Skitter Walk (trout and redfish colors) also the Top Dogs continue to do well in the early morning hours. Remember that from mid to late September and October fish will be starting to head back South. The trout and red fishing will definitely be picking up this month and next month.
I’ve had several reports of large schools of jacks and blue fish already starting to feed on some of the larger schools of bait fish. I had one report of tarpon being seen coming out of the water back towards Spring Warrior. This can only mean that things are about to start happening. So when you see the schools of bait fish being busted it might not be a bad idea to toss a plug or a grub in the middle of the school and see what happens.
The mullet seem to be a hit and a miss thus far, I went the other day and the mullet were all over the place and went back the next day and couldn’t buy a mullet, but they will also be starting the bunch up in the next month or so.
I still haven’t had any reports from anyone going out to try Grouper fishing from the Econfina or Aucilla rivers lately. Remember that this is the time of year for those afternoon thunder storms that can produce plenty of lightning, so remember if you can see it your probably too close.
Best bets for the month of September would be to continue to fish the shallower water in the early morning hours for redfish and maybe stray trout. Fish the deeper water (8 to 10) feet depths bouncing grubs off the bottom for the trout that are lying out in the cooler waters. Also, don’t forget to pack the cast net before leaving just in case you happen upon a few mullet. And as always don’t forget to include the family in all those outdoor plans.
